Health and Safety policy

Health and Safety Policy for Man and Van Archway

Man and Van Archway is committed to providing a professional, safe and healthy environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public affected by our removal services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out how we manage risks associated with home and office moves, loading and unloading, transport, and work at customers' premises.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by planning and carrying out all removal activities in a controlled and responsible manner. Health and safety considerations form an integral part of our day-to-day operations and decision making.

We will provide suitable equipment, competent staff, and clear procedures to ensure that moving, lifting, packing and transportation of goods are carried out safely and efficiently throughout our service area.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Man and Van Archway is responsible for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and ensuring that sufficient resources are available to maintain high safety standards. Senior staff will:

Monitor and review health and safety performance on a regular basis, identify hazards associated with removals and transport work, put in place appropriate control measures, ensure employees receive information, instruction and supervision, and promote a positive health and safety culture within the company.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must:

Follow company procedures and safe systems of work, use equipment and vehicles correctly and safely, report hazards, near misses, accidents and unsafe conditions, cooperate with management on health and safety matters, and attend training and safety briefings as required.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We conduct risk assessments for our core activities, including domestic and commercial removals, loading and unloading vehicles, driving and parking, handling awkward or heavy items, and working in confined spaces such as stairwells or narrow access points.

Where risks are identified, we adopt safe working practices, such as planning access routes in advance, assessing parking and loading areas for safety, using correct lifting techniques and appropriate team sizes, employing mechanical aids where practicable, and applying protective measures to prevent damage to property and injury to persons.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a key element of removal work. To minimise the risk of strain and injury, Man and Van Archway:

Trains staff in safe lifting and carrying techniques, encourages team lifting for heavy or bulky items, avoids unnecessary manual handling wherever possible, uses trolleys, dollies, straps and other aids when suitable, and plans each move to reduce the distance and difficulty of carrying items.

Equipment and Vehicle Safety

Our vehicles and removal equipment are essential to delivering a safe and efficient service. We ensure that all vehicles are regularly inspected, maintained and kept roadworthy, loading areas and tail lifts are used in a safe and controlled manner, equipment such as blankets, straps and trolleys is maintained in good condition, and loads are properly distributed and secured to prevent shifting in transit.

Drivers are responsible for daily vehicle checks and must report any defects promptly so that corrective action can be taken before vehicles are used.

Working at Customer Premises

Man and Van Archway recognises that every property is different and may present specific risks. Before starting work on a move, our team will:

Assess access routes, staircases, lifts and doorways for potential hazards, identify fragile items, trip hazards and restricted spaces, discuss any concerns with the customer and agree safe methods for moving items, and take care to protect floors, walls and fixtures where necessary.

We ask customers to help by keeping access routes clear, securing pets and children away from work areas, and informing our team of any known risks at the property.

Training, Information and Supervision

We believe that competent and informed staff are essential for safe removals. Man and Van Archway provides initial induction and ongoing training covering manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle and driving safety, hazard awareness at domestic and commercial premises, emergency procedures and incident reporting.

Supervisors monitor working practices on site and correct unsafe behaviour or conditions. Lessons learned from any incidents are used to improve training and procedures.

Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. We keep records of such events, investigate their causes, implement corrective and preventive measures, and review whether changes are needed to equipment, procedures or training.

We encourage open reporting so that potential hazards can be identified and addressed before they lead to harm.

Health, Welfare and Fitness to Work

We recognise the physical nature of removal work and the importance of staff welfare. Employees are expected to present themselves fit for work and not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to work safely.

We promote appropriate rest breaks, hydration and the use of suitable clothing and footwear. Any health conditions that may affect an employee's ability to carry out removal tasks safely should be discussed confidentially with management so that reasonable adjustments can be considered.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

Man and Van Archway is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance across all of our removal services. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, operational experience and feedback from employees and customers.

All employees are made aware of this Health and Safety Policy and are expected to work in accordance with its principles to help us deliver safe and reliable removal services.
